New Robinsons Galleria to Rise in Cebu

Robinsons Galleria Cebu set to break ground on July 25

CEBU, Philippines - Gokongwei-led Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC) is going to start the construction of its second shopping mall project in Cebu called the “Robinsons Galleria-Cebu,” located at the General Maxilom Street at the North Reclamation Area (NRA).The ground breaking ceremony, which will formally start the project, will be on July 25, 2012.

Recognizing Cebu’s fast growing economy and booming retail industry, the company is pouring in a significant investment to the province aside from its aggressive movement in the real estate industry through Robinsons Land Inc. (RLI).

In an earlier interview, RLI president and chief executive officer (CEO) Frederick D. Go said that aside from the establishment of the “Robinsons Galleria-Cebu,” the company plans to develop a mixed-used development at the five-hectare property at the NRA, that will include building of a hotel, commercial complex and high-rise condominiums.

Go said the company will first build the shopping mall component, after which will be introducing the Go Hotel brand to Cebu through the construction of a 150-200 room hotel.

The Go Hotel brand is deemed as an essential service hotel of the Gokongwei Group. In the next couple of years, RLI will have three hotels in Cebu, including the one it will build at its AmiSa development on Mactan Island.

Go said the hotel component at AmiSa will carry the brand Summit Shores Resort, an upscale resort component of the residential beachfront project Amisa.

The construction of the Summit Shores Resort on Mactan will also start this year, Go said.

The company recently renamed its first hotel facility in Cebu, the Cebu Midtown Hotel, into Summit Circle Hotel. This move, he said is in line with the company’s thrust to boost its tourism-related projects in the country.

Already, RLI has maintained three hotel brands in the country, including Summit Ridge Hotel in Tagaytay, Go Hotel, and its existing partnership with international chain such as Crown Plaza, among others.

RLC is one of the few well-known developers which have invested multi-million pesos or billion pesos to further develop some idle areas in Mactan Island.

Today, RLC is among the most profitable business of JG Summit Holdings Inc., with its 18 malls, 23 residential subdivisions, 22 residential condominiums, six office buildings and three hotels.

In Cebu, the Gokongwei Group operates the Robinsons shopping mall in Fuente Osmeña, Summit Circle Hotel, and the Blue Coast subdivision in Mactan, and its newest sea-side residential project in Mactan Island called AmiSa. (FREEMAN)

It's Official, Mariah Carey joins American Idol Panel

Fox just made it official: Mariah Carey is the latest successful pop diva to join American Idol. The 42-year-old singer will join the judges table for season 12.

"She's the biggest recording artist than any of these [singing competition] shows have ever had," Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly told critics at their press tour in Beverly Hills on Monday. "It's the artist many contestants have tried to emulate, tried to hit the songs, hit the notes. The deal concluded only hours ago."

As reported, Carey has been the leading contender to join the panel of American Idol judges this summer, which has seen a flurry of celebrity names floated in the press as possible candidates. Sources conflict on Carey’s salary, putting the number between $15 and $18 million. Either way, Carey is likely taking home more than JLo's first year ($12 million) and second year ($15 million) salary on the show. According to sources, JLo was holding out for $20 million to return for a third round. If there was a slight chance of Lopez staying before, it vanished once Fox signed Carey. Fox would definitely won't pay for two high-priced female vocalists.

Despite some reports to the contrary, veteran judge Randy Jackson is now expected to stay on board, though nothing has yet been announced. "We have a close relationship with Randy, he's a very important part of the television show," Reilly said. "Within the next week or so we'll confirm that."

As for now, Fox is expected to focus on its search for another male judge. One dark horse (and attractively low budget) candidate is former American Idol contestant Adam Lambert. Reilly notes there are plenty of possible candidates including some "nobodies," but suspects the new judge will be "something to talk about." Reilly expects to have the rest of the panel firmed up within the next two weeks.

Microsoft To Release Updated Version of MS Office for iPad and Android Tablets

Microsoft recently announced that they will now support touch-based controls for iPad and Android tablets. MS Office products like word processing, spreadsheet and email programs  - the new Office will respond to touch as well as keyboard or mouse commands.

This great news is an indication that the next Windows Tablet is gonna be a big hit to corporate users. Imagine yourself using the MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and all other Office apps on a tablet supporting the touch functions. That would be very beneficial.

Features in the new Office would include:

1. Inkling, which lets you use a stylus to write on a device’s screen. Handwritten notes are converted automatically to text. 
2. Integration with Yammer, a social network for businesses, and with Skype, a video chat service. 
3. Bing Maps will be part of the new Outlook email program. If there’s an address in an email, just tap on it to get directions. 
4. A "reading" mode on Word will make it easier to read word-processing documents on a tablet or e-reader. That mode will make the document look more like a book page. You can also embed video into Word documents, or share a document directly on Facebook.

Microsoft is currently planning to release the company’s full Office suite not only fo Apple’s iPad, but for Android tablets as well. The company's target would be this November 2012 for both launches.

Google's Nexus 7 Tablet Ships This Week

According to Google, hotly anticipated new tablet computer, Nexus 7, is shipping to customers who preordered it this week, amid reports of heavy demand.

In an e-mail to customers, the company said some versions of the 7-inch tablet are in the mail and others would be on the way to customers by Thursday evening.

"We've had incredible demand for the new tablet and are shipping them as quickly as possible," read the message. "If you placed your order by July 11, it will ship this week, and we've upgraded to overnight shipping so it arrives sooner. Orders placed after July 11 will ship next week with overnight shipping."

At its online Help Center, Google says 8 GB versions of the Nexus 7 have already been shipped in the United States. All 16 GB versions that were ordered before July 11 should be shipped by the end of the day Thursday. While orders in the UK and Australia will be shipped later this month.

Retailers have been reporting that they've already sold out of all of the Nexus 7s they've ordered. There have been scattered reports online of people who say they've already received a Nexus 7 or found one in stores. But, in an unusual move, Google has not announced an official date they'll go on sale in retail stores.

While all signs point to big sales, Google also remains mum on how many tablets have been ordered or shipped to retailers. In the past, some electronics companies have been suspected of intentionally limiting the supply of new products to create the appearance of strong demand.

The 8 GB Nexus 7 will sell for $199 while a 16 GB version sells for $249. Early reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. Wired magazine called it "the best Android tablet yet."

"The Nexus 7, the first tablet to wear Google's Nexus brand, sets a new standard for smaller slates, proving that just because it isn't as big as Apple's iPad doesn't mean it can't be just as useful, as fast, or as fun," Nathan Olivarez-Giles wrote for Wired, a CNN content partner.

Report: Taiwanese teen dies after 40-hour Diablo III marathon

Years of anticipation for Diablo III have brought about a number of marathon play sessions since its release on May 15, but one fan's obsession with the game has proven fatal.

An 18-year old Diablo III player in Taiwan was found dead recently after a 40-hour marathon session with the game, reports the Australian Associated Press. The player, who has only been identified as Chuang, reportedly booked a room at his local Internet cafe before diving into the game, not stopping for sleep or food the entire time. An employee of the cafe found him passed out on a table Sunday.

He woke up when approached, but collapsed after a few steps and was rushed to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy is pending, but authorities noted that the long period of sitting still could have created blood clots, which proved fatal.

Sadly, it's not the first game-marathon-related death in Taiwan this year. In February, Chen Rong-yu had a fatal heart attack while playing in an Internet cafe in Taipei while playing online smash hit, League of Legends. Fellow players, though, didn't notice he had died for another nine hours.

Deaths in Internet cafes are rare, but happen from time to time when players concentrate so intensely on their games, that they ignore factors like the body's need for sleep and food.

Last year, a 30 year-old Chinese gamer died after staying up for three consecutive days, barely eating or drinking anything. And last August, 20 year-old Chris Staniforth suffered a pulmonary embolism after a marathon session on his Xbox.

The deaths underscore the risk of game addiction, which more and more people are becoming worried about as the industry grows.

NY Knicks to let go of Jeremy Lin?

The New York Knicks plan to let Jeremy Lin join the Houston Rockets and as of 4 p.m. ET have decided not to match the offer sheet the point guard signed with Houston, The New York Times reported Tuesday, confirming what two sources within the Knicks organization had told ESPN's Stephen A. Smith on Sunday.

The Knicks have until 11:59 p.m. ET Tuesday to announce their decision whether they will match Houston's three-year, $25.1 million offer sheet or let the Rockets have Lin, who became an international phenomenon during a dazzling February.

If the Knicks don't match the offer for Jeremy Lin, the Rockets will get a player that posted higher averages than their point guards last season -- Kyle Lowry and Goran Dragic -- in both points and assists per 36 minutes last season.

The Times reported the Knicks aren't expected to announce their decision on Lin until Tuesday evening but that the team's deliberations on Lin's future had ended.

A team source told ESPNNewYork.com's Ian Begley earlier this week that the third year of the Rockets' offer -- worth $14.8 million -- caused the Knicks to consider letting Lin go. If the Knicks matched the offer, they would have been subject to a luxury tax in the third year, potentially bringing their total out-of-pocket cost for the team's salary to about $43 million in 2014-15.

The Rockets' offer to Lin would pay him $5 million in the first year, $5.225 million in the second and $14.8 million in the third, according to sources. Lin, a restricted free agent, made $788,000 last season.

Lin's life has been a whirlwind since last December, when he spent less than two weeks in Rockets' training camp. The Rockets liked what they saw in the undrafted Harvard graduate, but had to waive him because they had Kyle Lowry and Goran Dragic on the roster.

The Knicks picked him up and Lin was once again relegated to the bench behind Toney Douglas and Mike Bibby. Lin was briefly demoted to the developmental league, recalled and finally got his chance when coach Mike D'Antoni put him in with the Knicks floundering at 8-15. Lin scored a career-high 25 points in a 99-92 win over New Jersey Nets and "Linsanity" was born.

But Lin proved more than just an overnight sensation -- he had 28 and 23 points in his first two NBA starts, then scored a career-high 38 in a 92-85 victory over Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Will and Jaden Smith's sci-fi adventure film 'After Earth' Video went viral

Hollywood’s new means to market a high concept studio sci-fi film is the quasi-viral soft sell. Sometimes they are fake advertisements for fictional companies; other times, they come in the form of an endorsement by a third-party brand to give the viral clip more legitimacy. But the underlying goal is the same: Edutain audiences about the world of the film without ever expressly stating "This Is An Ad For a Potential Blockbuster".

The latest iteration is the first teaser for the M. Night Shyamalan-helmed Will and Jaden Smith sci-fi adventure After Earth, set to be released on June 2013. The film is about a father and son who crash land on Earth 1,000 years after humanity evacuated the increasingly inhospitable planet. Instead of any shots of its two stars, however, the video traces how the crash landing of an extra-terrestrial space craft helped boost human technology, and ultimately lead to the inevitable disintegration of the planet. It also introduces the Raige family, the pioneers of this technology and the descendants of Will and Jaden Smith’s respective characters. Interestingly, the entire timeline is presented as part of, well, a Facebook timeline - though the actual Facebook page for the film has barely developed.

Sylvester Stallone's Son Found Dead at Hollywood Home

Aspiring actor and filmmaker Sage Stallone, son of action movie star Sylvester Stallone, was found dead on Friday at his home in Hollywood, authorities and his attorney said.

Police and a lawyer for Sage Stallone, 36, the younger of two sons from his father's first marriage, gave conflicting accounts of how he was found, but police said there was no sign of forced entry or foul play.

Los Angeles police spokesman Lieutenant Andy Neiman said police found the younger Stallone's body at home while responding to a call asking authorities to check on his well-being. He said the case was turned over to the county coroner's office. Attorney George Braunstein said he was found by a housekeeper. Neither police nor Braunstein had any specifics about the circumstances of the death.

"There was some concern that his family and friends hadn't heard from him in the past day, and that's why the housekeeper went over there and opened up the house," the lawyer said. "It's a tragedy. He was a young, talented extremely good filmmaker and a lovely person."

Sage Stallone was the second of two sons fathered by Sylvester Stallone, now 66, with his first wife, Sasha Czack, whom he divorced in 1985 after about 10 years of marriage. He has three other children by his third and current wife, Jennifer Flavin. Stallone had appeared in a number of films, most notably with his father in 1990's "Rocky V," playing the title character's son, Rocky Balboa Jr., and in the 1996 disaster movie "Daylight," in which Sylvester Stallone starred as a hero leading an escape from a New York tunnel collapse and his son played a prison inmate. - Reuters

Yahoo Hacked: 400,000 Usernames, Passwords Leaked

One of the largest websites in the United States, Yahoo Inc., reported the theft of 400,000 user names and passwords to access its own site as well as those of other companies. They claim hackers had taken advantage of the security vulnerability in its computer systems.

Company spokeswoman Dana Lengkeek did not identify the other companies whose credentials were stolen or say how many of the stolen logins were for Yahoo's sites. She said the data was included in "an older file."

"We are fixing the vulnerability that led to the disclosure of this data, changing the passwords of the affected Yahoo! users and notifying the companies whose users accounts may have been compromised," Lengkeek said.

A group of hackers had previously posted hundreds of thousands of user accounts and passwords on a public website. The theft comes in the wake of a breach reported last month by the business networking service LinkedIn, which resulted in the release of some 6.4 million member passwords.

Anthony Sedlak found Dead in his Apartment

Anthony Sedlak, a Canadian Food Network celebrity chef, host and cookbook author is dead. He was 29.
Sedlak was found dead in his apartment in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on July 6, 2012 at around 7 p.m. on Friday due to undiagnosed medical condition.

“His unexpected and sudden death has devastated his family, friends and the culinary community,” his family said in a statement.

Sedlak was host of "The Main" on Food Network Canada and a judge on the network's "Family Cook Off." He also authored the book "The Main," which became a bestseller in Canada.

Basketball: US Olympic Players 2012 Announced

The USA Basketball announced the official 12-man roster for the London Games. For the final two spots, USA Basketball officials chose a pair of wings – James Harden of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Andre Iguodala of the Philadelphia 76ers – and passed on adding forward Anthony Davis, the top overall pick of last month's NBA draft by the New Orleans Hornets. It's clear the U.S. won't lack speed or versatility.

Harden will join Thunder teammates Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook on Team USA, the first time three players from the same NBA team have been selected. On the other hand, Thunder forward's Serge Ibaka will play for Spain's national team.

Joining Iguodala and the Thunder's trio on Team USA will be superstars James Lebron and Kobe Bryant, Tyson Chandler, Blake Griffin, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Kevin Love.

With a handful of players, including Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard and Chris Bosh, all of whom withdraws from consideration due to injuries, 10 of the roster slots appeared to be locked up heading into Friday's start of training camp, leaving five players – Harden, Iguodala, Davis, Rudy Gay and Eric Gordon – to compete for the final two openings. The absence of Howard, Bosh and LaMarcus Aldridge has left Team USA with a shortage of big men. Davis was a good candidate, but lacked the international experience of other players and sprained his ankle during a workout a week ago.

Team USA will play an exhibition match against the Dominican Republic on July 12 in Las Vegas. They will also play exhibitions in Washington, D.C.; Manchester, England; and Barcelona, Spain; before arriving in London. Team USA will open the Olympics with a game against France on July 29.

• A film adaptation of the book by Michifumi Isoda, in which he paints a picture of life in the final days of the Tokugawa shogunate, based on his painstaking analysis of the household accounts left behind by a low ranking samurai. Director Yoshimitsu Morita, portrays the inner workings of a samurai household fighting to tighten finances. The Inoyama family has been in the service of Kaga clan as expert accountants and reckoners. The 8th head of the Inoyama family, Naoyuki (Masato Sakai), is so phenomenally gifted in numbers that he was called "abacus maniac." To cope with the increasing expenses that come with trying to move up, he works together with his wife Koma (Yukie Nakama) and family to do all they can to economize.

Permanent Nobara

• This is based on popular manga artist Rieko Saibara’s manga series. As in his FUNUKE Show Some Love, You Losers! (Funukedomo, Kanashimi no Ai wo Misero), director Daihachi Yoshida’s films have all sorts of lovable, quirky characters. Naoko (Miho Kanno) returns home with her young daughter, where her mother Masako (Mari Natsuki) runs the only beauty parlor in town-meeting place for lamenting bad luck with men and laughing over dirty jokes. Unbeknownst to them, Naoko has been secretly seeing her former teacher, Kashima (Yosuke Eguchi).

• A live-action adaptation of Soubei Amako’s cute ninja action manga. A popular animated television series, it presents the comical slapstick antics of a group of boys training to be elite ninjas. Director Takashi Miike works in a diverse array of genres, from violent works to family films. Rantaro (Seishiro Kato), a first grader at Ninja Academy, spends his days with his fellow students Shinbee (Futa Kimura) and Kirimaru (Roi Hayashi) making all sorts of blunders. One day, an assassin turns up at the home of fourth grader Takamaru (Takuya Mizoguchi).
